This equipment is a self-contained unit designed to
demonstrate the principle of momentum and allow for the experimental
determination of the force exerted by a fluid jet upon stationary flat
and curved surfaces (targets).
1. Key Components and Design
The apparatus is built to deliver a vertical jet and
accurately measure the resulting reaction force.
- Jet
Enclosure: The apparatus features a two-sided clear
fabrication section (likely Acrylic or similar transparent material)
for visualization of the jet and the impact process.
- Water
Delivery: Water is fed through a Brass Nozzle and
discharged vertically to create the high-speed jet. The system also
includes a Glass Cylindrical test section (likely enclosing the
jet/target area).
- Target
Mechanism:
- The
jet strikes a target carried on a stem that extends through the
cover.
- A weight
carrier is mounted on the upper end of the stem. The vertical force
exerted by the jet is measured by placing balancing weights on
this carrier.
- The
dead weight of the moving parts is counter balanced by a compression
spring.

2. Experimental Purpose
The primary experiment is the verification of the momentum
equation (also known as the impulse-momentum principle).

Measurement: Measure the actual force exerted on both
the flat plate and the hemispherical cup by observing the balancing
weights required to return the stem to its initial position.
- Theoretical
Comparison: Compare the actual measured force with the theoretical
force calculated using the measured flow rate, jet velocity, and the
geometry of the target surface.
- Effect
of Target Shape: Demonstrate that the hemispherical cup exerts a much
larger force than the flat plate because it reverses the direction of the
water jet more effectively.
