Each slate is 210 x 297 x 2 mm high-impact polystyrene with a matt white finish and rounded corners, rigid enough to write on while resting on the knee. The front is printed in cyan blue with 1 cm squares for maths; the back carries French-style double-line ruling (a 5 mm double line followed by two 8 mm lines, with right-slanting guide lines every 4 cm) for handwriting. An 8 mm cyan border runs round both sides. Pupils write with an HB pencil and erase with a rubber eraser, and the slates wash in water.
